Nusa Lembongan's crystal-clear waters are home to an incredible variety of marine life, making it one of Bali's premier snorkeling destinations. Whether you're an experienced snorkeler or a first-time visitor, here's your guide to the magnificent creatures you might encounter during your underwater adventure.
Manta Rays
The undisputed stars of Nusa Lembongan's waters, these gentle giants can be spotted year-round at Manta Point and Manta Bay. With wingspans reaching up to 5 meters, watching these graceful creatures glide through the water is an unforgettable experience. The best time to spot them is during the early morning hours when they visit the cleaning stations.
Bear in mind that the conditions there can be choppy.
Sea Turtles
Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are regular residents around the coral reefs. You'll often find them gracefully swimming near Crystal Bay or munching on coral at SD Point. These ancient mariners are typically unbothered by snorkelers, allowing for amazing photo opportunities.

Clownfish (Nemo)
Made famous by "Finding Nemo," these charismatic orange-and-white fish can be found nestled within their host anemones throughout the reefs. Watch them dart in and out of their protective homes – they're particularly abundant around Mangrove Point.
Giant Trevally
These powerful predatory fish can be seen hunting in schools or as solitary hunters. Their silver bodies can reach impressive sizes, and they're often spotted in the channel between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.
Moray Eels
These fascinating creatures peek out from their coral hideouts, revealing their distinctive faces. The most common species here are the giant moray and the honeycomb moray.
Butterflyfish
These colorful reef dwellers are easily recognizable by their distinctive patterns and shapes. Several species inhabit these waters, including the raccoon butterflyfish and the threadfin butterflyfish.

Lionfish
With their distinctive striped patterns and fan-like fins, lionfish are beautiful but should be admired from a safe distance due to their venomous spines. They're often found hovering around coral bommies.
Angelfish
The emperor angelfish and royal angelfish are just two of the species you might encounter. Their vibrant colors and patterns make them some of the most photogenic fish on the reef.
Batfish
Often traveling in small groups, these distinctive fish with their flat bodies and elongated fins are a common sight around the deeper edges of the reef.
Parrotfish
These colorful characters play a crucial role in reef health by cleaning algae from coral. Watch them scraping away at the reef with their beak-like mouths – you might even hear the crunching sound!
Best Practices for Marine Life Encounters
- Maintain a respectful distance from all marine life
- Never touch or chase the animals
- Avoid using flash photography
- Don't feed the fish
- Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the marine ecosystem
While marine life is abundant year-round, certain species are more commonly seen during specific seasons. The calmest waters typically occur between April and October, offering the best visibility for spotting these incredible creatures.
